Education
Education plays a vital role in laying the foundation for a healthy and successful life. In fact, education can prevent the poor from being exploited, provide hope for the future and offer tools that allow individuals to act as advocates for economic change within a community! An educated population promotes a better educated nation and an improved social structure.
According to UNESCO, 58 million children of primary school age are not in school. In addition, two-thirds of the 793 million functionally illiterate adults are women. Yet, a child whose mother can read is 50 percent more likely to live past age five.
Our Response
Papua New Guinea:
For over 8 years World Hope International has run Professional Development workshops for Elementary Teachers through weeklong workshops. These workshops provide an opportunity for teachers to improve the quality of their teaching and to create classroom resources which they can use in their classrooms.
Mobile Backpack Libraries have been an essential resource for schools in the remote highlands where there are no libraries and school reading material is very limited. These Backpack Libraries have up to 30 books in them which are used both as a teaching resource for the Elementary Teachers but also reading material for the children so they can learn to read as well as learn about the world outside of their community and country.
